5 Travel Tips for Seniors

5 Travel Tips for Seniors

Ah, summertime. Lots of sunshine and lots of opportunities to travel. Many of us travel to get away from the heat, even though getting to the airport on a hot day can be quite a challenge. For senior citizens on the go, travel can be extra grueling.

However, going places and seeing people who live far away can bring a lot of joy. Instead of avoiding travel because it’s too hard, here are five tips that can help make taking a trip a little easier.

1. Pack Light

You have to be prepared, but that doesn’t mean bringing your entire wardrobe with you. Make sure your bag or bags are small enough to easily lift and maneuver. Check the weather at your destination and pick out the appropriate attire, then don’t second guess yourself and throw in a bunch of extra shoes and jackets. A lightweight folding cane is a great tool to have at an airport so you can tuck it away while seated.

2. Be Kind to Your Legs

Being confined to a chair for so many hours at elevation can really do a number on your legs. At the end of a long flight, you’ll feel a lot worse for wear if you haven’t taken the necessary precautions. Do some stretches before boarding the plane and getting to your seat, and consider wearing compression socks if you have them.

3. Hydrate

No matter how old you are, flying will make you dehydrated. If you don’t have enough water before and during your flight, you can become lightheaded and nauseous. Instead of ordering coffee or a cocktail before you board, get a big glass of water to make sure your body is ready for the elevation.

4. Organize Your Medications

You can escape your home and many of your routines, but you can’t get away from the supplements that keep you healthy. Make sure you have a pill organizer so you can have the right amount of everything instead of packing up a bunch of pill bottles. You may also want some medications that are just for travel, such as magnesium pills for sleeping or something to offer a little immunity boost while you're on the go. Consult your doctor to see if there’s a specific travel supplement that will work with your current medication regimen.

5. Have Fun

Travel can be really stressful, but also very rewarding. Enjoy the sights and the change of scenery. Take a lot of pictures so you can remember the trip when it’s over. Don’t dwell on the comforts you had to leave at home and embrace the new experiences.

A summer trip can feel a little daunting, but the right preparation can make it a smooth process. Keep these five tips in mind and take the vacation you deserve.
